Olympic Wonder...Am I a Brit-ophile?

I love (and also cringe at!) the British sensibility...but always want to figure out the amazing pagan roots and general history behind stuff they do.

And I love events like the Olympics, because of the massive numbers of people that come together to do something really cool, that brings much of the world together. World community building!

At the Opening Ceremony they actually had a Glastonbury Tor replica there in the stadium, topped with a World Tree! "Lovely"- as they might say!

And lo and behold, a maypole (another world tree!)....this is during the early part of their "timeline theme" drama.

KB
Kenneth Branagh appeared, doing what he does best!

Kenneth Branagh doing a Shakespeare line and heralding the end of the Agrarian age...and the beginning of the Industrial Age.

The forging of the ring...... Or is that a giant sperm? It lit on fire and floated up into the air, where the other rings awaited...so cool. Lots of neat pyrotechnics this night!

Here are some of the working class people after numerous hardships, and the Rings they forged Floating above. Tolkien reference!

Here the magic rings have connected and are joyously exploding, showering the land with their magnificence. Very climactic!

Later in the show we saw clips of hunky David Beckham in a speedboat bringing the torch up the Thames to the stadium. Here he is just before landing...

Now THAT is what I would enjoy being a part of! What fun!

So during the parade of nations each country came in, accompanied by a young person in a flower fairy-esque wispy dress, carrying a huge copper Petal that they said had the country name on it. The flag bearer for each country planted their flag on the Tor, and the flower Petals got put on these long pipes coming from the center of a giant circle.

When the flame arrived, carried in turn by and then split up among these aspiring athletes, they were blessed by their sponsor athletes, and then they lit the petals....

And the flower became the cauldron after the petals arose to be upright! Wonderful, wonderfully pagan and elemental!

Blessings and Connections!!
